Studies on the Selective Immunosuppression of Promary Immune Reaction in the Chicken Spleens by Antilymphocyte Sera

Abstract
The importance of the bursa of Fabricius and the thymus in the development ,of immunity in the chicken has been well established.
The B lymphocytes produce humoral antibody while cellular immunity comes from the T lymphocytes.
Many reports have been made of studies of B and T cells in variety of immunological diseases. There is little doubt that destruction of these cells by anti-B lymphocyte sera or anti-T lymphocyte sera for the purpose of observing the selective immune suppressive effect will prove of considerable value in the study of immunological reaction.
This study was made to investigate the selective immunosuppressive effects of rabbit antithymic lymphocyte sera, rabbit antibursal lymphocyte sera and rabbit -antithymic-bursal lymphocytes sera, hereinafter referred to as ATLS, ABLS, and ATBLS, respectively, on the primary immune response in the chicken spleens.
For preserving selective specificity only to thymic and bursal lymphocytes, ATLS and ABLS were cross-absorbed with thymic or bursal lymphocytes.
0.5cc of ATLS, ABLS and ATBLS were given intravenously for 5 successive days to destroy the T and/or B cells, and also on the third day 20% of sheep red cell suspensions were injected into the chickens to elicit the primary immune reaction. One week after the red cell injection the chickens were killed and their
